Smrekova draga is larger, extended sinkhole blocked by ridges from all sides. Due to temperature inversion and the special micro climate it experienced the reversal in vegetation.

Smrekova draga belongs to the forest reserve Golaki, however, it is located only a few hundred metres away from the edge of the Zgornja Idrijca natural park. The more we descend into the sinkhole, the more vegetation distinct for highlands we meet. Thus at the bottom of draga, where even in the summer the temperatures rise only slightly above freezing point, thrive dwarf pine and other cold-resistant shrubs. When ascending from the bottom towards the ridges, we may notice the pine, mixed, and at the top the sole beech forest, ranging one after another in a few metre-wide bands.

At an altitude of merely 200 m the vegetation bands undergo that which is common only after reaching the altitude of 100 m in the Alps and what is more the passage though vegetation bands is reversed, which makes Smrekova draga so special. At the rocks accumulated above the road leading to Smrekova draga it is fairly easy to detect fossilized shells large enough to fit into the palm of your hand.
