From the inside of the woods towards the riverbeds the wood, intended for water drifting, was transported also with the help of a forest railway, named lauf.

The forest railway ran a distance of a couple of hundred to as far as 3.000 m. Lauf was made of wood, whereas the cart wheels and other small parts were made of steel. Cargo carts were able to transport up to 1 m³ of wood. From the beginning, lauf was simply composed and towards the end when it underwent some transformations, more than one hundred years had passed. Lauf was the only such device in Austria-Hungary.
